TCP, a cornerstone of the TCP/IP suite, governs how data travels across networks. Unlike its cousin, the User Datagram Protocol (UDP), which prioritizes speed over reliability, TCP guarantees data delivery in the correct order and without errors. This makes TCP ideal for tasks like web browsing, email, and file transfers where data integrity is crucial.

The 3-Way Handshake: A Step-by-Step Guide

Imagine a handshake between two people agreeing to exchange information. The 3-way handshake follows a similar principle:

  1. Client Initiates (SYN): The client, eager to connect, sends a message with a special flag called SYN (synchronize). This flag signifies the client’s intent to establish a connection and includes a sequence number to manage data order.
  2. Server Acknowledges (SYN-ACK): Upon receiving the SYN message, the server acknowledges the request by sending back a message with both SYN and ACK (acknowledge) flags set. The server’s SYN flag indicates its readiness to connect, and the ACK flag confirms receipt of the client’s message. The server also includes its own sequence number.
  3. Client Confirms (ACK): Finally, the client sends a final message with just the ACK flag set, acknowledging the server’s response. This signifies that both parties are synchronized and ready to exchange data.
